Here are the following places that you will explore during your Kedarnath package:
1. Kedarnath Temple
The main destination you will explore during your tour package is the Kedarnath temple itself. The temple is built with the interlocking stone slabs in a distinctive pyramidal style. It is believed that the temple was originally built by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The Shivlinga here is unusual as it is in the shape of a bull’s hump and not the standard form.
2. Bhairavnath Temple
About 500 meters uphill from the main temple, there is a temple dedicated to Bhairav, known as the fierce guardian deity of Kedarnath. From here, you get a full bird’s eye view of the entire Kedarnath Valley and the temple below.
3. Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Tal)
It is a glacial lake about 3 km above the main temple at 3,900 meters, named after Mahatma Gandhi, whose ashes were immersed here. The lake is serene, often partially frozen, and surrounded by snow peaks. It is a short trek from Kedarnath and a peaceful escape from the crowd at the main temple.
4. Vasuki Tal
This is a high-altitude lake at 4,135 meters, about 8 km from the Kedarnath temple, not on the standard yatra route, as this is for trekkers who want to go beyond. The lake offers clear views of the Chaukhamba peaks and involves crossing glaciers. Recommended only for physically fit trekkers with prior experience.
5. Bhim Shila (Bhim Rock)
Bhim Shila, also known as Bhim Rock, is a large rock that reportedly acted as a natural barrier during the 2013 Kedarnath floods, protecting the temple from the debris flow. You can see it on the trail near the temple, and it is a reminder of what this valley has survived.
6. Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi
The samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya, who was one of India’s greatest philosophers and the main credited with reviving and reorganising the Char Dham circuit, is behind the Kedarnath Temple. A historically significant and spiritually important spot that many pilgrims miss.
7. Guptkashi
This is your overnight halt place on the way to the Kedarnath trek. It is famous for its Vishwanath Temple and the Ardhanarishwara Temple. The name translates to “hidden Kashi”, which Lord Shiva is said to have hidden from the Pandavas here. It is a quiet hill town with decent food, and from here you can get the first real view of the Kedarnath range as you drive in.
8. Mandakini River and Sonprayag
The Mandakini originates near the Chorabari glacier above the temple and flows all the way down through the valley. Sonprayag is where the Mandakini and Son Ganga rivers meet, which is considered a sacred confluence where many pilgrims take a dip before beginning the trek.
This journey is a perfect mix of spirituality, adventure, and natural beauty, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
